'Life wasn't soo bad there until the day the city council decided to raise
bull moose in near by forest .Maybe the purpose was to provide the party
bosses with something to hunt; maybe to show the world plentiful our
wildlife is; What they really wanted , nobody knows for sure , but the
fact is, Our lives changed when they started their new campaign .
' Fist they put up statues of bull moose with antlers painted silver. Then
they began to bring in live moose from all over the country .There were
some moose already in our forest but, once the campaign was underway ,
they brought in more, from as away as Siberia. Next they posted a new law
- THE KILLING OF BULL MOOSE IS EQUVALENT TO MURDER'
'Oh , I remember seeing a poster about it', I said ' I could'nt see why it
was such a serious crime '
'For us , it was a crime , but the wolves couldn't read the posters . They
started pouncing on moose . Once bull moose was found ripped apart , then
another , and another.The City Council was outraged,and a new law was
posted- KILL ALL WOLVES INDISCIRIMINATLY.
' The bounty for each paw was a bootle . This was what farmers had been
waiting for all thier lives. They threw down their hoes and instanly took
up their rifles .
What
an opportunity - shoot one wolf, get four bottles; shoot two ,get eight .
To keep the wolves from running away ,they put red
flag around the forest . with in a week , all the wolves were lying dead ,
paw amputated.
' With no more wolves around , the moose took over forest all
day , they ambled a long , knocking off the branches and revelling in the
sight of thier statues . There were so many of them that seemed to be more
antler than branches in the forest .
'But then , already , they began to die - probably some disease carried
from Siberia. If the wolves had still around they could have eaten
the sick moose , and there would be no problem , but instead , the sick
animal roamed with herd , spreading thier disease.
'Can you imagine a disease like that close to Moscow? pestilence ! What a
shock to the city council. It could turn into nation wide scandal .
And
what official want to end up
'Meeting
well held a day and a night ,and finaly , these intellectuals
found solution - " The dead wolves must repalaced. WOLVES ARE THE
REFUSE OF COLLECTORS OF NATURE"
' You must be kidding ; it's impossible' I said , getting dizzy from yorsh
and rhis conversation .
' It's true , I suppose they decided that wolves had to work just like
every body else;as the party says:" Those who don't work , don't eat
"
'Well, that's logical ; I said , thinking it's better to agree with party
'.
' Team was set up in near by area where wolves still run wild.
The wolves were caught, put in cages, deprived of food, and then set free
in our forest. Next, the City Council announced its new policy-THE CRIME
OF SHOOTING A WOLF IS PUNISHABLE BY DEATH. THE WOLF IS A FRIEND OF
MAN.
A
monument to the Unknown Wolf was erected on the highway.
'Meanwhile, in the forest, the wolves were in a quandary. The
stench of rotting flesh was everywhere. They found the moose that were
still moving unappetizing. So, instead of eating this carrion, the wolves
headed for the animals on the farm.
'They attacked whole herds of cattle and the only thing the
herdsmen could do was wave their shotguns at them because, as I said,
shooting a wolf was punishable by death.
'The wolves' feast went well, but didn't last very long - you know how
much meant there is on a collective farm. Next they started looking for
something else to dig into, and set their sights on the chickens and the
geese. What were the farmers to do but hide their animals inside the
house?
'So you see what a lovely mess we're in. During the day, we
have smelly moose milling about; at night, wolves howling in the vegetable
patch and chickens flying around inside the house. But that's not all. A
few days ago, a neighbour's boy was on his way to the outhouse when he was
dragged into the forest by a wolf.
'That's when I decided that if anything should happen to my
little
girl, I wasn't going to put up with this any longer.
